Thursday 04/04/2013: Tourist Day Dubbo
Cool night made for comfortable sleeping. Had a quick breakfast and off to the Zoo. We got there just after opening to get the extra tickets for the Giraffe feeding. We parked near the Black Rhinos and went and waited for the 09:25 Keeper Talk. The Keeper gave an informative talk on the poaching of Rhinos and the destruction it causes. Next we walked to the Meerkat exhibit to learn about how they maintain their numbers to suit the environment. We moved to the Giraffe feeding and Amanda & Amy has decided that Giraffe saliva is not nice. It has the consistency of a snotty/slime! We had morning tea at then watched the Hippo's get fed. Happy made room for his feed by spraying his last meal out the back end, it was like watching a lawn mower pass over a large pile of cut grass. We learnt about the differences between Asian and African Elephants, and watched the Sumatran Tiger (from Dreamworld Qld) get her meal from a Hessian bag. We watched the small claw otters being fed prawns. Amy & Amanda learned about the two Przewalski Horse foals being born 2 days apart. We picked some souvenirs at the shop and off to Town. We picked up maps from the Visitor Centre and parked nearby because the Main St only has 1 hour parking. We had fun at the Old Gaol looking in the solitary confinement cell was scary. We haven't been in any thing that dark since Potter's Gorge in West Australia last year. Picked up laundry supplies at Woollies - missed the Japanese Gardens by 10 minutes. Pooped into Ryan's Caravans and Les met Scott Black and thanked the Office Girls for posting our replacement water pump parts to Darwin last year. A big day for all - will sleep well tonight.
