Monday 03/09/2012 Day 71: Minippa Rest Area to Shoreline
Caravan Park Port Augusta.
The wind came up after midnight
and blew until the sun came up! It was a warmer night and everyone had a
restless sleep. We packed up and headed off towards Port Augusta. The drive was
pretty mundane except for the cross wind playing havoc with the traffic. One
Roadtrain had his last carriage change lanes coming round a corner that nearly
finished our trip early. A quick driver change after Kimba and Amanda got the
best part of this section of the trip. We drove past the Mine at Iron Knob,
“the birthplace of the Australian steel industry”. We called into the small
town for another pit-stop and found a nice rest area behind the Iron Knob Post
Office. We eventually made it to Port Augusta on fumes after getting average fuel
economy with the head wind. We put 76.42ltrs in at the first servo we found.
The caravan park is neat & tidy and on the shores of the Spencer Gulf. We
set up and headed for a quick look around town. We refilled the LPG at Mitre 10
@ $28/9kg and some supplies from Coles. Amanda caught up with Laundry and Ryan
& Les went for a late afternoon fish after getting some advice & bait
from the Top ‘O’ the Gulf Marine store. They fished a sandbank out the front of
the caravan park and picked up 2 yellow eye mullet & 2 Australian salmon on
squid & cockles. Amy enjoyed the peace & quiet whilst they were out.
