The wind slowed down overnight and
it was cool when we woke up, there were 6 vans here overnight. Ryan & Les
heard the foxes yapping through the night. We set off North into the headwind
that came up. We arrived at Coober Pedy mid-morning. This place is very
interesting. We set up, had lunch and off to the Information Centre. We picked
up the permit to drive through the Aboriginal land to look at the dog fence,
castle & two dogs at the Breakaways. This was inexpensive at $2.20 per
adult. We went into a gem store run by a chap from Hong Kong, he had nice
opals. We followed the mud map down the road to Oodnadatta; the road became
quiet rough for the next 15km till we got to the fence. We then turned left
onto the 14km rough track to the Castle. Our speed was 25km/hr. We were in awe
of the moon like landscape. We headed to the two lookouts and then off to the
Stuart Hwy. The trip took 2 hours and was worth it. We visited the Beetle Gem
Shop and learnt about the different types of Opals. The kids got to noodle out
the front. We enjoyed a great meal at John’s Pizza Bar & Restaurant. Water
is scarce here and 20cents buys you 3 minutes of shower time. We all managed to
finish our showers in 40cents!
