Monday 10/09/2012 Day 78: Mt Conner Rest Area to Yulara.
There was 2 caravans, 1 campervan
camped overnight. There were lots of toilet stops by passing motorists through
the night! We woke up to the neighbours marvelling at the sunrise on Mt Conner.
It was cold and not that spectacular. We were by ourselves by 07:45. We said
goodbye to the crows, finches & pigeons getting drinks from the water tank
and headed off. Uluru (the rock) is so big we saw glimpses 60km out. We were
impressed as it got bigger & bigger as we reached the Campground. The Kata
Tjuta (Olgas), seem large as well and they are 32km further out. We set up on
red dirt, had lunch, packed water and walked off to the Ayers Rock Resort Town
Plaza. We looked in all the shops, information centre (booking for tours) and
supermarket. Ryan & Les scouted somewhere to eat dinner. We had nice
ice-creams from the deli and headed back. It is 35 degrees C inside the van. There
are several lookouts within walking distance around here, where you can get
great views of the rock. We jumped in the car for a quick lap of the rock. It
is rusty red, textured & big, we drove around the base to Mala and looked
up at the people on top of the rock – bloody tourists ignoring signs. Ryan
& Les did the Kuniya walk to the waterhole. We drove back and Amanda &
Amy got ready for their “sounds of silence dinner under the stars”. Ryan &
Les had a measly roo burger & steak sandwich at the gecko café. It cooled
down quickly. Ryan & Les walked to dinner in t-shirts & shorts and came
back after sundown in winter jackets. Amanda & Amy returned late evening and
thoroughly enjoyed their experience.
Daily Stats: Distance: 167km, Duration: 2hrs15min, Weather:
Sunny Hot day/Cool evening.
